Perhaps we’re biased, but there’s nothing quite like that cracking-open-a-new book feeling. Here are some of our favorite reads from this year to share with all the amazing women in your life this holiday season.
For your friend that's binging the Great British Bake Off on Netflix:
Eat Up! Food, Appetite, and Eating What You Want by Ruby Tandoh (Amazon, $15)
Written by fan-favorite GBBO contestant Ruby Tandoh, this book is full of insights on your favorite comfort foods and traditions. It’s a celebration of our appetites, our bodies, and our cultures – get it for your friend that’s interested in all three.
For the friend who won’t see the movie until they’ve read the book:
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas (Amazon, $12)
This powerful young adult novel should be required reading. It recently became a movie starring Amandla Stenberg so hurry up and gift this one and then follow it up with a movie date.
For your mom, grandma, best friend, coworker or basically any woman in your life:
Becoming by Michelle Obama (Amazon, $20)
You can’t go wrong with this incredible memoir by the former First Lady. Her story is sure to inspire you and all the people you love (and make for great conversation when you call and ask them how they liked it).
For the pop culture queen in your life:
This Will Only Hurt a Little by Busy Philipps (Amazon, $16)
Perfect for your friend that’s followed Busy on her hit shows from Freaks and Geeks to Dawson’s Creek, Cougar Town – and now Busy Tonight – or for your friend that just started following her hilarious Instagram Stories, this memoir is easy to read and easier to love.
For the friend you're trying to recruit for the #GNIReads Book Club:
Pachinko by Min Jin Lee (Amazon, $11)
We read this book earlier this year and immediately fell in love – so much so that it might just be our favorite book of the year. Gift this to your friend who could really use a reason to fall in love with reading again.
For your friend that's getting over a breakup:
I Might Regret This by Abbi Jacobson (Amazon, $18)
This collection of essays is both funny and relatable. Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson gives us a real look into how she got over a recent breakup with her signature dry humor. Bonus: It’s the #GNIReads December book club pick!
For your friend who loves rom-coms:
The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory (Amazon, $12)
This is the romance novel you’ll want to tuck into your holiday travel luggage for a feel-good read. Gift it to the friend who’s headed out on a trip and could use some good energy to take with her.
For the friend who loves discovering up-and-coming new authors:
Heads of the Colored People by Nafissa Thompson-Spires (Amazon,$16)
This is Thompson-Spires’ debut novel and it’s a complete knockout. She’s put together and amazing collection of stories centered on her black identity – prepare to laugh, cry, and be left speechless.
And a few book-reading accessories for the bookworm who already has 'em all:
