Welcome to another edition of “Get to Know Your Hosts!” GNI has more than 20 hosts across the country and in Canada and each month we ask one a few questions about their self-care/reading habits.

This month we sat down with Lane Mann, one of our Austin hosts! Lane is the Communications and Events Coordinator at the University of Texas at Austin where she hosts events for students (making her a natural at hosting book club!). Here’s what she had to say:

1. What’s the latest book you’ve read that you couldn’t put down and why?
Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes. I’ve been listening to Pop Culture Happy Hour for years and could not wait to read Linda’s debut novel. Evvie Drake is processing the loss of her husband, and her grief is complicated. Evvie’s friend suggests that she rents her extra room to MLB pitcher Dean Tenney, who is grieving the downward spiral of his baseball career. Holmes’ humor and the way she describes how their relationship develops makes the book impossible to put down. I’m also passionate about reclaiming the phrase “guilty pleasure” and think we need to throw away the romance novel stigma!

2. Favorite literary character?
I can’t help but think of an example from YA fiction. Lyra Belacqua from Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy is my absolute favorite literary character. She’s feisty and independent, but following her on an incredible journey reveals her vulnerabilities too. The BBC adaptation of the trilogy is debuting later this year, so it’s time to reread!

3. How do you like to relax, recharge, or practice self-care? Any tips?
I recharge by going to dance class. There are a few local classes (Melody DanceFit and Ballet Austin) that are empowering and fun. Also, my Sunday morning treat - waking up early, going to a coffee shop, and reading - is essential to my week! Prioritize routines that bring you joy.

The best self-care tip I recently received from a friend is being mindful about finding a balance between doing things that replenish or deplete your energy. Doing things doesn’t have to always be depleting - find what replenishes you.

4. Recent obsession(s)?
