GNI has nearly 20 hosts across the country (and in Canada!) and each month we ask one a few questions about her self-care/reading habits. This month, we’re featuring Brittany Horowitz! Brittany is one of our amazing GNI Reads Philly book clubs hosts, is a health communications specialist and a volunteer at Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN). Here’s what she had to say…
1. What’s the latest book you’ve read that you couldn’t put down and why?
I recently reread Billy Crystal’s memoir, Still Foolin’ ‘Em: Where I’ve Been, Where I’m Going, and Where the Hell Are My Keys? I know…a shocking choice for a twenty something, especially since the book focuses on aging, but it’s so good! I highly recommend reading it via audiobook. Billy narrates, and it’s amazing. It’s like he’s right there and telling you personal life stories and learnings. You’ll laugh and even cry.
2. Favorite literary character?
Hmm…can I focus on a real character for this one? I have a lot of respect and appreciation for Eddie Huang after reading Fresh Off the Boat: A Memoir. His writing is so honest and beautiful, and I believe his experience of growing up as an outsider should be read by all. Bonus: he’s hilarious, and I suggest following him on Instagram.
3. How do you like to relax, recharge, or practice self-care? Any tips?
I recently started to go rock climbing, and it’s been such a challenging and energizing activity. I’ve also been treating myself to candles. I used to only buy expensive candles as gifts for other people, but then I realized why not treat myself too? Finally, facials at Rescue Spa have been a new and regular treat. Ask for Sylvia if you’re in Philly 😀
4. Recent obsession(s)?
Listening to Hillary Kerr’s Second Life podcast, drooling over beautiful photos of Maine via Julie D. O’Rourke’s Instagram and wearing my new Entireworld. sweatshirt. For those in Philly – dinner at Irwin’s, shopping at Vestige and (not recent) bagels from Philly Style Bagels.
