Welcome to another edition of “Get to Know Your Hosts!” GNI has nearly 20 hosts across the country (and in Canada!) and each month we ask one a few questions about her self-care/reading habits. This month we’re featuring Mallorie Valentine! Mallorie leads social media and brand content at Grubhub/Seamless, a food delivery app. She’s also one of our NYC book club hosts! Here’s what she had to say…

1. What’s the latest book you’ve read that you couldn’t put down and why?
I absolutely devoured One Day in December by Josie Silver a few months ago. I picked it up at the airport on a whim and could not put it down. I had been on kick of some heavier books and memoirs before reading it, and it was exactly what I need. It was so lovely. I recommended to everyone at the GNI Reads event that month and spent about 5 minutes convincing them to read it, too.

2. Favorite literary character?
Charlie from the Perks of Being a Wallflower. I read that book when I was a freshman in high school (because MTV started running commercials about it, so I had to have a copy!). It was one of those books that I read at just the right time in my life and go back to regularly. Stephen Chbosky did such an incredible job capturing the complexity of being a teenager and spun a unique story. Charlie and I are the same age; I’d love to know what he’s doing now.

3. How do you like to relax, recharge, or practice self-care? Any tips?
Nothing’s better than sitting on my couch after a long week with some under eye patches working their magic, while I order in dinner and watch To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before for the 300th time. My self care is being a total couch potato. I always feel so much pressure to have plans after work, burn the midnight oil at the office, run errands, and generally fill every minute of the day. Allowing myself a Friday night or Sunday afternoon to not do anything at all is such a decadent treat.

4. Recent obsession(s)?
Element Candle – I discovered this candle while on vacation in Charleston, SC with my husband. These candles smell amazing, have a wide wick that doesn’t just burn straight down the center of the candle, they’re smoke free and make crackling sounds like a fireplace. It’s so perfect for an NYC apartment. They’re also handcrafted from organic materials in Charleston. I almost never buy stuff when strolling through city markets, but this one got me!
